Earlier this month I took part in a destination wedding summit in the country of Guatemala. Guatemala is not usually the first country that comes to mind when considering a destination wedding venue, but hear me out…
Antigua is a colonial city that has a fascinating history: it was the first capital city of Guatemala. After many earthquakes and a massive landslide devastated the city hundreds of years ago the city was abandoned. Now, Antigua is a bustling city full of history and restored colonial architecture. The city itself is an UNESCO world heritage site.
All of the streets are paved in the original cobblestones. There are several churches, boutique hotels and ruins in the city that can be used for wedding and reception venues. Many of the venues are open-air and are beautiful backdrops.
Lake Atítlan, Guatemala
Roughly 3 hours from Antigua is Lake Atítlan. The lake is surrounded by several small towns and is another beautiful location for a destination wedding in Guatemala. This is also a great area for a honeymoon!
While I was at the summit I was able to meet several local wedding planners, floral designers, photographers, transportation companies, etc. Not only am I looking forward to introducing Guatemala to travelers, I am also looking forward to building relationships with many of the professionals in Guatemala!
Photo credit for all of the photos go to Vincent van de Berg of Pixan Photography. Our group had the pleasure of his company traveling with us for a week!
