I knew that I had to visit Hobbiton while I was in New Zealand. Who else is a Lord of the Rings fan? Even if you are not a fan (like my traveling companion) you will thoroughly enjoy the tour. She was glad I made her go 😉
We were staying in Auckland and it is close to a 2 hour drive to the Hobbiton area. It’s funny to see signs pointing you towards Middle Earth along the way! The landscape in New Zealand is nothing short of beautiful, so the 2 hour drive to Hobbiton did not feel long.
The best way to see Hobbiton is with a tour guide. Yes, you can show up, pay the entrance fee and walk around yourself. But, without the tour guide you lose out on the stories. And the stories is what makes the movie set come alive.
You learn about how Peter Jackson chose the setting for Hobbiton, who owns the land and how it is maintained, the care and maintenance of the movie set (close to 500,000 people per year visit Hobbiton), and so much more.
I don’t want to share those stories with you today, because it takes away from your experiences once you travel to New Zealand. I will share pictures with you though!
