Renting a Vacation Home or Villa for a Week

Renting a vacation home or villa

Renting a vacation home or villa is a great way to go to a destination for a week while staying in all the comforts of home.  Vacation homes and villas range in size from 1 bedrooms to 12 or more bedrooms making it perfect for traveling in large numbers. When considering renting a vacation home or villa keep in mind the following:

  1. Who are you renting from?  Are you renting from an individual or from a company that manages the property?  If you are renting from an individual (like HomeAway, VRBO, AirBnB, etc.) and staying in their own home or rental property what are the safety precautions in place?  If there was an accident on property who is responsible for the damage or the insurance claim?  Is the rental property up to code and has been properly cleaned and maintained?  I do not work with individuals who rent their own properties.  I err on the side of caution and work with companies that manage these properties that have rules and regulations in place to protect the renter.  This way, I know exactly the rental that my clients will be in and won’t have to worry about the condition and safety of the property.  There have been several cases of fraud with vacation home rental purchases as this part of the travel industry is not regulated.  Don’t become a victim.  The internet is not full of kind and trustworthy people.
  2. What are the fees outside of the initial rental price?  Many times upon check-in or check-out there are extra fees that must be paid.  Typically, they are cleaning fees or maintenance fees.  Make sure and read the fine print on this.  When I work with my clients and there are extra fees this is communicated up front.  No one likes to be surprised with an extra hundred or couple hundred in fees!
  3. Where exactly is the property located?  Just because the property says it is near a beach doesn’t mean it’s on a beach.  The vacation home could be in a luxury rental subdivision and not a stand alone rental.  Buzzwords like ‘villa’ and ‘condo’ does not necessarily mean you will be in a stand alone rental especially if you are renting a 1 or 2 bedroom.
